Two altered vintage welding masks transformed into mythic relics of transformation.
Modern-Day Alchemist: The Dual Masks is a sculptural art set exploring the sacred balance of Masculine and Feminine archetypal energies forces that exist within every human being.
Originally utilitarian tools of fire and labor, these vintage welding masks have been reimagined as symbolic artifacts of personal and universal alchemy.
The masks once belonged to the artist’s late father-in-law, carrying with them the memory of craft, industry, and the hands that shape metal in the forge. Through layers of salvaged industrial fragments and natural relics, the objects were transformed into surfaces rich with story and symbolism.
Rusted washers, vintage nails, salvaged screws, deer bone, jewelry fragments, beads, and recycled materials were assembled and integrated into each mask. Fire-kissed finishes, rust bloom, and verdigris patina create textures that bridge the worlds of labor, ritual, and myth.
Together, the masks embody the alchemical principle of transformation through the union of opposites — strength and intuition, action and reflection, fire and flow.
One mask radiates outward with structure and metallic intensity, echoing the archetype of outward action and protection.
The other moves with warmer tones, curved forms, and flowing beadwork, representing intuition, mystery, and inner transformation.
Accompanying the masks are repurposed welding gloves, symbolic of the hands that forge change. A deer spine bone incorporated into the work speaks to mortality, renewal, and the cycles of rebirth found throughout nature.
Displayed together, the masks form a complete alchemical journey — a reminder that transformation arises through the integration of opposing forces.
Like metal in the forge, we are continually broken down, reshaped, and reborn.

This work transforms two welding masks into mythic artifacts — relics of personal and universal alchemy.
In alchemical tradition, transformation occurs through the marriage of opposites: fire and water, strength and flow, destruction and renewal.
These masks represent that eternal dance.
They are not about gender identity but about archetypal forces — the energies that shape us and the balance required for wholeness.
The masks once belonged to my late father-in-law, a welder whose craft worked daily with fire and metal. By reimagining these tools as symbolic artifacts, the piece honors both the labor of the hands and the mystery of transformation.
Each mask merges industrial remnants and natural relics — rusted metal, salvaged hardware, bone, jewelry fragments, and aged materials — creating surfaces that reflect both decay and renewal.
The result is a meeting place between the industrial and the mystical.
Together, the masks remind us that the forge is both external and internal.
The work we do on the material world mirrors the work we do on ourselves.
